Steven Gerrard to suit up for Liverpool Legends in January friendly

Gerrard to play for Liverpool in January, but not first team

Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Jeff Attinella saves the shot of Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard will indeed suit up for Liverpool this winter. It just will not be in an official capacity.

It was announced on Monday that Gerrard is set to take part in a friendly between Liverpool Legends and Australian Legends on Jan. 7 at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney. Gerrard, who left the English club this past summer to play for the LA Galaxy, will be joined by the likes of former teammates Jamie Carragher and John Arne Riise.

Liverpool Legends will be coached by Gerard Houllier. A full roster is expected to be announced in the near future.

“It will be great to play with the official Liverpool FC Legends," Gerrard told Liverpool's website. "The squad looks like it’s a great set of lads, it’ll be good to get on the pitch with them. Our fans are the best and to play in front of them again will be emotional, I’m sure.”

Gerrard, 35, has been linked with a return to Liverpool for several weeks. The Galaxy recently said they would be open to letting him train with his long-time team this winter, but would not loan him out.

The veteran midfielder was the talk of a different potential friendly last week, as Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre said Gerrard could suit up for the Galaxy in a friendly against Liverpool next summer.
