Bogert: Joe Gyau, Caleb Stanko to re-sign with Cincy

Versatile right-sided player Joseph-Claude Gyau and central midfielder Caleb Stanko will sign new contracts to stay with FC Cincinnati, sources tell MLSsoccer.com.

Stanko and Gyau each had their contract options declined for 2021, but the club and players have been in negotiations this offseason. Cincy announced their contract decisions last week, becoming the first club to do so.

Gyau, 28, was a bright spot during Cincy's disappointing 2020 season. He started 20 of the club's 23 games at right wingback or right wing, scoring once. Gyau, who has three US men's national team caps, joined Cincy in the summer of 2019 after spending a decade in Germany at various clubs, including Borussia Dortmund. He made one appearance for the club's first team, instead earning most of his minutes in the second and third tier of German soccer.

Head coach Jaap Stam told media last week he hoped Gyau would return next season.

Stanko, 27, joined Cincy ahead of their expansion season and has earned one cap with the USMNT. He's made 36 MLS appearances after spending time in Germany and Switzerland, mostly with SC Freiburg.

After announcing their roster update, Cincy had 15 players under contract for 2021. Stanko and Gyau will make that 17, leaving Cincy with plenty of room and flexibility for more additions.
