Three-time MLS Cup champ Juninho announces retirement

Juninho celebrates - 2012

After a hugely successful career, former LA Galaxy midfielder Juninho has announced his retirement from professional soccer.

The 31-year-old won three MLS Cups with the Galaxy as well as two Supporters' Shields. He was named to the MLS All-Star squad three times and last played in 2019, making two appearances for the Galaxy. He made 210 MLS appearances, the vast majority of which for LA.

“I am extremely proud of my career and all that I have accomplished, but it is time for me to step away from playing and move on to the next chapter,” Juninho said in a statement. “I have been fortunate to play this game professionally for over 10 years and am grateful to all of my coaches, teammates and fans I have met along the way.

"Each of you have played a pivotal role in my life and I have formed friendships that will last forever," he continued. "Thank you to São Paolo, Chicago Fire, Club Tijuana and especially the LA Galaxy – where I made the best memories of my career – for all your support. I am honored to represent Los Angeles for this club and help us capture three MLS Cups.”

Juninho is best remembered for his key role in the Galaxy's dynasty over the first half of the 2010s decade, a constant presence in the club's midfield behind stars Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane and others.

He joined the Galaxy from Sao Paulo in 2010 and spent time with Liga MX's Club Tijuana as well as a season with the Chicago Fire FC in 2017.
