FC Cincinnati have acquired winger Álvaro Barreal from Velez Sarsfield in Argentina, the club announced Wednesday afternoon.

The 20-year-old, signed using Allocation Money, will occupy an international roster slot and be added to FC Cincinnati’s 2020 roster upon the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate, P1 Visa and completion of any mandatory quarantine period under local government and MLS health and safety protocol.

“We are always seeking for interesting, good young talents in the national and international markets to strengthen our roster,” FC Cincinnati general manager Gerard Nijkamp said in a statement. “In our opinion, Álvaro Barreal is this type of potential talent who can compete within our squad and must now take the next step in his career at FC Cincinnati.”

Barreal made 18 appearances, including two starts, with Vélez Sarsfield across all competitions since 2018 after coming up through the club's youth ranks. He made his professional debut against Boca Juniors in Sept. 2018 and scored his first professional goal against River Plate on Feb. 4, 2019.

Barreal represented Argentina with the U-20s at the 2018 COTIF tournament in Valencia, Spain. Barreal made five appearances, all starts, scoring two goals as Argentina went on to win the tournament.
